The Overture doesn’t use any of the opera’s themes and resolves in E major, far away from Fidelio ‘s ultimate triumphant goal of C major. Egmont, Op. 84 by Ludwig van Beethoven, is a set of incidental music pieces for the 1787 play of the same name by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. It consists of an overture followed by a sequence of nine pieces for soprano, male narrator, and full symphony orchestra. Beethoven's only opera, Fidelio, was originally titled Leonore. His passion for the idea of a female hero was so great that he composed four different overtures for it.
Amongst the sketches for the overture (presented here in a separate MIDI), there are also sketches for the Largo from the "Ghost" Trio, op. 70 nr. 1.

Prior to this, Daniele Gatti was music director of the Royal Philharmonic (1996–2009), principal conductor of the Orchestra dell’Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in Rome (1992–97), principal guest conductor at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden (1994–97), music director of the Teatro Comunale in Bologna (1997–2007), and principal conductor at the Zurich Opera House (2009-2012). The Leonora Overture No. 3, Op. 72, was composed in 1806, and is much the most successful of the three Leonora overtures. One important distinction between the Leonora overtures and the Fidelio overture of 1814 is that the later work makes no attempt at a précis of the whole opera, but instead it provides the powerful curtain-raiser that Beethoven by now sensed was needed to properly complete Beethoven gives here a musical equivalence to the themes developed by Goethe.
